If you’ve decided on a holiday break in Edinburgh, you’ll be assured of a wonderful stay in the 5* Radisson Collection Royal Mile Edinburgh hotel located in the heart of this vibrant Scottish city. The Radisson Collection is a boutique style hotel of contemporary design situated in the Old Town area of Edinburgh. The hotel is creative, modern and sophisticated with several unique touches (there are beehives on the roof and the hotel produces some of it’s own honey in the Summer!)
All the rooms are bright, colourful and artistic making them ideal for the global traveller. We were lucky enough to stay in a Signature King Room with a stunning view of the historic Edinburgh Castle. Rooms are well-equipped including an en-suite bath / shower room, fridge, flat-screen tv, safe, tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryer, air-con, free high-speed Wi-fi and really comfy beds! Extras include iPod connection and even a free mobile phone to use during your stay if required!
I decided to take my mum on this review with me, neither of us have been to Edinburgh before and it’s always good to have an opinion from a different age group!
Upon arrival at the Radisson Collection, we were welcomed by friendly staff and we were offered a complimentary Gin & Tonic or a soft drink. Later that evening, we dined at the Radisson’s very own stylish Cucina restaurant. With an Italian influence, there are a great variety of dishes on the menu. I started with the Soup of the Day and my mum had the Ham Hock Croquette and Quails Egg Salad. For our main course, I chose the Potato Gnocchi with Buffalo Mozzarella, Tomato and Basil and my mum had the Smoked Haddock Fishcake with Spinach, Poached Egg and Mustard Sauce. Our desserts were Sticky Toffee Pudding, Caramel Sauce and a Vanilla Ice Cream. There’s also an extensive drinks menu available including a Signature Honey Cocktail called ‘A Bee’s Journey’ which even comes with a free packet of wild flower seeds! We agreed that the meals were of a very high standard – compliments to the chef! The waiting staff were very friendly and attentive throughout the evening.
In the morning, we were welcomed back to the hotel’s Cucina restaurant for breakfast and offered a menu with a wide array of cooked dishes. As a vegetarian, I was thrilled to see the ‘Veggie’ option – a vegetarian take on the traditional Scottish breakfast, complete with veggie sausages and veggie haggis! My mum had the ‘Scottie’, with smoked bacon, sausage, haggis, black pudding, potato scone, tomato, mushroom and an egg which she equally enjoyed! In addition to the set menu, we were also free to choose from the continental breakfast buffet table as well. From pastries to cold meats and from fruit to cereal you’re sure to find something that takes your fancy. We particularly liked the chilled Raspberry and Yogurt smoothie – yummy!
Edinburgh is a city to ideally be seen by foot, and that’s what is so great about the Radisson Collection Hotel; it’s a short walk away from many of the city’s top landmarks and attractions. There are lots of things to do for all ages! If you enjoy museums there are many situated in the Old Town including the National Museum of Scotland, Surgeons Hall Museum, Royal Scots Regimental Museum and Anatomical Museum. Family fun attractions nearby include The Edinburgh Dungeon and Camera Obscura & World of Illusions. If you or someone you know is a Harry Potter fan you’ll be happy to discover that Edinburgh has it’s very own Diagon Alley (Victoria Street) where you’ll find many quirky Harry Potter shops, selling memorabilia. There’s also a replica Ford Anglia car from the films parked there too!
Edinburgh’s main attraction is the Castle which stands proudly above the city and if you walk to the top you’ll experience some wonderful views stretching beneath you. (And it’s only a 5 minute walk from The Radisson Collection!) We visited the castle on the day of the Queen’s 65th Coronation anniversary and witnessed a 21-gun royal salute!
The well-known Royal Mile is a stone’s throw away from The Radisson Collection and is home to many shops, lively bars and fantastic places to eat. During the day you can expect to see street entertainers including traditional bagpipe players and dancers. Scottish tweed, kilts, scarves and whisky are in abundance!
If you fancy a drink closer to home, why not drop into the Radisson’s very own bar, Epicurean. Open to visitors and guests alike, you’re sure to enjoy a cocktail or two from the bar’s diverse drinks menu. You can even book a Mixology Master Class with an experienced mixologist there who’ll show you how to create your favourite cocktails and give you the chance to make your own!
After your Epicurean cocktail (and if you’re feeling brave enough) why not join one of the ghost walking tours that wind between the churchyards and alleyways of the Old Town. Day-time walking tours are also available and you’ll be sure to pass the grave and statue of Grey Friar’s Bobby – the skye terrier who loyally guarded his master’s grave for 14 years in the 1800s.
There are several hop-on, hop-off tour buses which will take you on a guided tour around the city including past the Royal Palace, Holyrood House. (The nearest stop is just around the corner from The Radisson on the Royal Mile) Other must-sees are the Botanic Gardens and also the Royal Yacht Britannia which is berthed at Leith. If the streets of Edinburgh aren’t lively enough, they certainly are during July and August for the world-famous Edinburgh Arts & Fringe Festival and spectacular Royal Edinburgh Military tattoo which also takes place in August.
If you’re unsure of where something is the staff at The Radisson Collection are very knowledgeable about the local area and are always happy to help.
For a city that is steeped in history and charm, our only regret about visiting Edinburgh is that we didn’t stay for longer! Thank you Radisson Collection for a fantastic stay – you truly made our trip an effortless and a memorable one! Looking forward to visiting again soon!
